Gua Sha Techniques

Technique used in therapeutic massage

Gua Sha is a traditional soft tissue technique that uses a smooth-edged tool to gently glide across the skin. The method helps release tight fascia, encourage circulation, and break up areas of dense muscle tension.

While the technique may appear simple, it can be very effective when applied with intention and proper pressure. Gua Sha is often used on the back, shoulders, and neck to address stubborn tightness that may not respond easily to traditional massage alone.

At Take Ten Massage, Gua Sha may be incorporated into a session when it supports the goal of improving mobility and releasing persistent tension.

How It Works

During treatment, a smooth tool made of stone or stainless steel is lightly applied to the skin with massage oil. The tool is gently stroked across the tissue in controlled movements. These strokes help stimulate circulation and encourage the soft tissue layers to release. In some cases, mild redness may appear in the treated area. This is a normal response to increased circulation and typically fades within a short time.

Who It’s For

Gua Sha may benefit people who experience:

• Persistent muscle tightness
• Restricted mobility in the back or shoulders
• Dense or “stubborn” muscle tension
• Postural tension from sitting or desk work

What to Expect

Gua Sha should feel firm but controlled. The goal is not discomfort, but rather to encourage the tissue to soften and release. The technique may be used briefly within a session alongside other therapeutic approaches.
